Special Lectures & Events - Annual Meeting and Exhibition 2006
SUNDAY,
JULY 30
Keynote address & opening reception
The meeting will officially
open with a keynote address, "Rethinking cell and metabolic
engineering: Eliciting usually unreachable phenotypes via
global Transcriptional Machinery Engineering (gTME)" by
Dr. Gregory Stephanopoulos of the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. A reception will follow in the Exhibit Hall.
The reception is hosted by the exhibitors and is open to
all attendees.
MONDAY, AUGUST 1
Quarter Century Club luncheon
The Quarter Century Club luncheon,
honoring those members who have been with the Society for
25 or more consecutive years, will be held from 11:30 am-1:00
pm. This event is by invitation only.
Alma Dietz Actinomycete
dinner & lecture
This year's reception, dinner and panel discussion
will be held from 6:30-9:00
pm. A discussion on "From the mountain to the clinic: Streptomyces
roseosporus and daptomycin" will be given by guest
speaker R. Baltz, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Lexington, MA. You must purchase a
ticket to attend this event.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 2
5K Annual Fun Run/Walk
The 11th Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk is sponsored by Alberta
Research Council. Participants should meet no later than 6:30 am in the hotel
lobby. Participants sign-up for this event when they register. To participate,
the Society requires that each participant complete a hold-harmless
form. There is no fee to participate. Finishers will receive
commemorative t-shirts, refreshments and snacks.
Amgen award lecture
This year's lecture on "Splendid gifts from microorganisms
- Discovery, Chemistry and Chemical Biology" will be presented by Dr. Satoshi
Omura, The Kitasato Institute, Tokyo, Japan from 1:00–2:00 pm.
International reception
This year's reception for international participants will
take place from 5:30–6:30
pm, prior to the Society dinner. This event gives international participants
an opportunity to meet and speak with the SIM Board of Directors and other participants
from around the world. Open to international attendees only.
Society reception
and banquet
The annual Society reception and dinner will take place on Tuesday
evening at 6:00 pm. The reception will be held in the Exhibit Hall, with dinner
to follow. The banquet speaker is Dr. Arnold Demain, Drew
University, Madison, NJ. The dinner is free to all
attendees who register for the full week, including student and emeritus registrants.
However, pre-registration for this event is required. If you did not receive
a ticket when you registered, please inquire at the registration desk. Additional
dinner tickets may be purchased and all exhibitors are encouraged to attend.
WEDNESDAY,
AUGUST 3
SIM Business meeting
The SIM Business Meeting will be held from 11:30 am-12:30
pm. All SIM members are encouraged to attend. Mandatory attendance for all SIM
Officers.
Outing
Camden Yards Baseball and Dinner at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. A separate
ticket must be purchased for this event.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 4
Charles Thom award lecture
The Thom Award Lecture will take place on Thursday
afternoon from 1:00-2:00
pm. Richard Monaghan, Monatay Entyerprises LLC, Morristown, NJ, will be discussing,
"Patents for Patients—Opportunities in Microbial Products.".
